This 1999 Pokémon Base Set Pikachu #58 features the Red Cheeks Shadowless variation, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. Essential visual markers of this print run include the absence of a drop shadow to the right of the art frame, the extended 1995, 96, 98, 99 copyright line, and the red cheek coloration on Pikachu. Graded PSA 10 Gem Mint, PSA has recorded 843 examples achieving this designation.
The Red Cheeks variation stems from an early production correction during the initial English printing of the Base Set. Art directors at Wizards of the Coast initially recolored Pikachu's cheeks red to match the character's electrical sparks before reverting to Arita's intended yellow design in later Shadowless and Unlimited print runs, establishing the Red Cheeks Shadowless card as a key historical error from Pokémon's debut Western release.Show more
